Star Trek X: Brent Spiner Working on Story

Brent Spiner, Star Trek: The Next Generation's resident android Data, is taking the reins of the next installment of the series' movie franchise.

According to TrekWeb, in an interview with Star Trek Communicator magazine, Trek producer Rick Berman said Spiner is working with screenwriter John Logan to develop the 10th Trek movie.

"I actually met (Logan) through Brent Spiner, and I am really looking to working with him," Berman told the magazine. "We have not begun working on the script yet, though John has written the story, along with myself and Brent Spiner. The premise has been accepted and approved by all the parties involved, and when all the proper contractual arrangements with our cast have been completed, John will commence writing the script."

Berman sidestepped questions about the film's plot but said that Data would go through some changes. "I think you could say that. It's not the reason Brent joined us in the story process, but there certainly is a wonderful arc for Data in this movie." He also said the next movie would be "a rip-roaring adventure with a lot of humor."

Jonathan Frakes who plays Cmdr. Riker in the series and directed the last two Trek films, has not been named as Star Trek X's director. Berman says Frakes current non-Trek workload is responsible for his unavailability to helm the project.
